Hello, my name is Ryan Selvy and I am a nineteen year old guy living in Baltimore studying Graphic Design and Illustration at MICA. This blog documents my work from my High School Senior year and on.

Medium: Photography, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Photoshop
Explanation: I photographed some of my favorite Baltimore vacancies and digitally drew on top of them in Adobe Illustrator.

Prompt: “Make something relating to an environment of your choice.”
Medium: Adobe Illustrator
Explanation: I’m overly excited about Baltimore. I thought the initial hype would fade away but I keep finding myself making art about it. This piece is a set of cards that remind me of things I need to remember while I live in Baltimore. In the future I hope to make more and get decks of cards printed.

Prompt: “Make a box and create something with it”
Medium: Graphic printed on photo-glossy paper, and wood.
Explanation: I brought Google Maps Street View to life. Placed on the corner across from 1209 North Charles Street passers by had the opportunity to experience Google Maps in real life. The simulated screen shot depicted a generic screen viewing Google Maps but the street view was cut out to show the real building behind it.

Prompt: “Make a box and create something with it”
Medium: 13” x 12.5” x 24” medium-density fiberboard box, graphic printed on photo glossy paper, and 90 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
Explanation: Using the box as a storage container, I stored 90 peanut butter & jelly sandwiches and handed them out to strangers under the false identity of a company I made up. After only 2 hours I passed out 38 sandwiches to complete strangers who knew nothing about the project.

Prompt: “A self-portrait without including a picture of yourself”
Medium: Graphic printed on 13x19 glossy paper
Explanation: I took the route of using a QR code that directs you to a Google search of my name. Whether you want people to see things or not, if it’s on the internet it becomes your self portrait. Not to mention, since I love the internet it represents me even more. (3 cheers for the first result being tumblr!)

Prompt: “An Unkind Self-Portrait”
Medium: Graphite on Drawing Paper
Explanation: I took the prompt as a self portrait with the things that make me feel insecure about myself so I exaggerated the size of my head, ears, and nose. It came out looking like a caricature.

“What Are You Obsessed With?”
For Studio class I was assigned to take 5 pictures of something that I obsess with. Naturally since my school’s production of Peter Pan was this weekend I took pictures of that and loved how they turned out.

An update of my sketchbook. Working on page 21 might do something with water colors? Can’t decide. We’ll see.

ROMAN HEAD
A self portrait done in charcoal off complete observation. I wore a Roman Warrior helmet and used a strong light for dramatic effect on my face. I really like this one and am about to do another one similar but in my costume for the school play. It should be interesting.
